Opening Round:  West Warwick 9 CLCF 3

Last year’s loss in the 11 year old State Championship is becoming a distant memory for the West Warwick 12 year olds. 

In the opening round of the 12 year old State Tournament, West Warwick took an early lead and never relinquished it to the defending Cal Ripken State Champions.

In the top of the first inning, West Warwick took a 1-0 lead when Ben Roy reached on an error and scored when Nick Motroni’s single to centerfield.

While starter Jake Roy held CLCF scoreless for three innings, West Warwick took a 2-0 lead when Greg D’Ambrosca took the first pitch of the fourth inning and sent it over the left field fence. 

After CLCF cut the lead to 2-1, West Warwick scored two more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 4-1 lead.  With one out, Jake Roy singled to left field, moved to second on Motroni’s single to centerfield, and scored on Rich McNeil’s double to right center.  D’ambrosca, then, followed with his second hit of the game to score Motroni.

CLCF came back with two runs on one walk, one single, and one towering home run by A.J. Rosemarino to cut the lead to 4-3. 

In the top of the sixth inning, West Warwick put the game out of reach with five runs on four walks, two errors, and one mammoth 250 foot three run home run to right field by Richard McNeil.  Scoring runs in the inning were Anthony Indeglia (walk), Kurtis Quinn (reached on an error), Jake Roy (walk), and Nick Motroni (walk).

Pitching well for West Warwick was Jake Roy.  Roy, who struck out three batters, gave up one run on five scattered hits in four innings.  Anthony Indeglia closed the game by striking out two batters and allowing only three hits in two innings of work.

Offensively, West Warwick received hits from Jake Roy (2/3, two runs scored), Nick Motroni (2/3, two runs scored), Rich McNeil (2/4, one run scored and four r.b.i.’s), Greg D’Ambrosca (2/3, one run scored and one r.b.i.), and Evan Barrera (1/3). 

The West Warwick 10 year old All Stars came up short in their bid to unseat CLCF as State Champions.  Last year, West Warwick worked its’ way through the Losers Bracket to play CLCF in the 9 year old championship.  This year, West Warwick came from behind in the Loser’s Bracket Final against Kent County rival, Coventry, but could not turn the tide against CLCF in the State Final. 

 Opening Round:  West Warwick 11 Darlington 1

Led by the stellar pitching of starter Hunter Dean and a nine hit attack, West Warwick defeated Darlington, 11-1.

In three innings pitched, Dean allowed one run on one hit while striking out six batters.  In one inning pitched, lefty Tom Doran struck out three batters.

After allowing one run in the first inning, West Warwick tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning on hits by Alex Cabral and Tom Doran.In the bottom of the second inning,

West Warwick took a 4-1 lead on hits by Anthony Moretti, Mike Tetrault, and Joe Paquette. 

In the bottom of the fourth inning, West Warwick defeated Darlington by the “ten rule” by scoring seven runs on four hits and three walks. 

 Leading the way for West Warwick in the fourth inning were Joe Paquette (single), Alex Cabral (r.b.i.), Tom Doran (bases clearing double), Alex Hernandez (run scored), Ryan Johnson (two run single), Anthony Moretti (run scored), Travis Caddick (two run single), and Mike Tetrault (one run scored). 

Winner’s Bracket Final:  CLCF 11 West Warwick 2

In the Winner’s Bracket Final, CLCF took advantage of four walks and pounded out nine hits en route to an 11-3 victory.

Offensively for West Warwick, they received contributions from Joe Paquette (one run scored), Hunter Dean (two singles and one r.b.i.), Alex Cabral (one r.b.i.), and Travis Caddick (one single and one run scored).

Loser’s Bracket Final:  West Warwick 6 Coventry 5

In a dramatic fashion, West Warwick came from behind in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Coventry, 6-5.

With the bases loaded, Joe Paquette singled in Ryan Johnson to make it 5-4 and Alex Cabral lined a 2-2 pitch into right center field to score Travis Caddick and Mike Tetrault with tying and winning runs. 

Offensively, West Warwick was led by Paquette (2/4, two runs scored), Cabral (2/4, two r.b.i.’s), Tom Doran (2/3, one triple and one run scored), Hunter Dean (1/3), Ryan Johnson (one run scored), Travis Caddick (one run scored), and Mike Tetrault (2/3, one run scored).

  Pitching well for West Warwick was Tom Doran who struck out seven batters in five innings of work.

10 year old State Championship:  CLCF 6 West Warwick 5

In the 10 year old State Championship, West Warwick’s bid to force an “if” game was thwarted by a talented CLCF nine, who will be making their second consecutive trip to the New England Regional.

West Warwick took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Ryan Johnson (walk) and Billy Rae Singpracha (single) scored on Mike Tetrault’s timely two run single to centerfield.

After allowing two runs on one hit, one error, and two walks to CLCF in the top of the third inning, West Warwick took the lead, 3-2, when Alex Cabral was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a single by Hunter Dean, advanced to third when Ryan Johnson reached on an error, and scored on a bases loaded walk to Singpracha.

After CLCF built a 6-3 lead, West Warwick valiantly came back in the bottom of the sixth inning.  With one out, Matt Reid singled to right field and Anthony Moretti reached on an error.  After a strikeout, Joe Paquette lined a single to load the bases.  Alex Cabral and Tom Doran, then received back to back walks to enable West Warwick to cut the lead to 6-5.  West Warwick comeback bid, however, would fall short as the game ended with a pop fly the CLCF shortstop. 

Offensively, West Warwick was led by Joe Paquette (single), Alex Cabral (two walks, one run scored, and one r.b.i.), Tom Doran (two singles and one r.b.i.), Hunter Dean (two singles), Ryan Johnson (one run scored), Billy Rae Singpracha (one single and one run scored), Matt Reid (one single and one run scored), Anthony Moretti (one run scored), and Mike Tetrault (two run single). 

     West Warwick (5-2 in league play) continues to improve and excel with each game played in the Rhode Island Connie Mack league.  In their 10-3 victory over South Kingstown I, they received the three elements which make for success on the baseball diamond:  solid pitching, consistent defense, and timely hitting.

     Sophomore to be, Ryan Lawton worked the first three innings, allowing only two runs on three hits while striking out four.  Rich Grenier Jr. picked up his second victory of the year by throwing 16 of his 25 pitches for strikes.  The freshman to be induced two groundouts, three pop ups, and one fly out in his two innings of scoreless relief.  Matt Masse allowed only one run on two hits in the sixth inning before giving way to his brother Jon, who needed only ten pitches to close the game for West Warwick. 

     After Lawton pitched a 1-2-3 first inning, West Warwick wasted little time in scoring the first run of the game.  Dom Bisceglio led off with a single and scored two outs later when Connor Carew belted a double to left center.

     In the bottom of the second inning, West Warwick made it 2-0 when Sam Williamson doubled, moved to third on Rich Grenier's single to left field, and scored on Nick Carney's sacrifice fly to right. 

     After Rich Grenier retiring three South Kingstown batters with the lead run on second base, West Warwick scored two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning.  Rich Grenier received a one out walk and moved to third on Nate Lacroix's double to center field.  Grenier, then, scored when Domenic Bisceglio reached on an error.  Next, Dillon Coffua line a single to left center, scoring Lacroix. 

     In the bottom of the sixth inning, West Warwick broke the game open with six runs on two walks, one "three run" error, and hits from Matt Masse (double), Chris Franklin (r.b.i. single), and Dillon Coffua (two run double). 

     Offensively, West Warwick received contributions from Bisceglio (1/3, one run scored), Franklin (1/1, one run scored, and 1 r.b.i.), Dillon Coffua (2/4, one run scored, and 3 r.b.i.'s), Ryan Lawton (one run scored), Connor Carew (r.b.i. double), Steve Courtemanche (one run scored), Matt Grosso (1/3), Sam Williamson (1/3, one double, and one run scored), Rich Grenier Jr. (1/1, one walk and one run scored), Matt Masse (one double and one run scored), Nate Lacroix (one double and one run scored), and Nick Carney (one run scored and 1 r.b.i.). 

West Warwick 12 South Kingstown II 4

Led by the pitching of Jon Masse, West Warwick came from behind to defeated South Kingstown II, 12-4. 

In going the distance, Masse, who was backed up with 12 runs on 13 hits, allowed only one earned run on four hits while striking out 11 batters.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, West Warwick tied the game up when Nick Carney doubled and scored on a two out single by ninth grader to be, Ryan O’Kelly. 

After allowing two unearned runs in the fourth inning, West Warwick scored six runs on three hits, two walks, two errors, and one hit batsmen.  Connor Carew led off with a double and scored when WWCM alternate, John Morrison, tripled to right center.  Dom Bisceglio, then, singled to tie the game at 3-3.  After Bisceglio stole second base, Rich Grenier’s reached safely when his sacrifice bunt was mishandled, allowing Bisceglio to score. 

West Warwick scored three more runs for a 7-3 lead on one walk (Jim Thornton), one hit batsmen (Chris Viveiros), and one error (Matt Grosso’s grounder to third). 

In the bottom of the fifth inning, West Warwick scored two more runs on hits by Morrison (lead off double), Thornton (r.b.i. single), and Carney (r.b.i. single).

In the bottom of the sixth inning, West Warwick built a 12-3 lead on hits by alternate Cam Genest (lead off single), Morrison (r.b.i. single), Matt Masse (single), and Thornton (single). 

West Warwick 11 South Kingstown II 5

Trailing 5-1 after 3 ½ innings, West Warwick came from behind and scored ten unanswered runs to sweep a doubleheader against South Kingstown, 11-5, in a game called after five innings. 

Picking up the victory with two innings of scoreless relief was Rich Grenier Jr.  Grenier, who kept the South Kingstown batters off balance with his 12-6 curve ball, retired the last four batters he faced on two strikeouts and two groundouts. 

Offensively, West Warwick received contributions from Cam Genest (1/2, one run scored), Matt Grosso (1/2, two runs scored, and 1 r.b.i.), Connor Carew (r.b.i. single), Matt Masse (one walk, one stolen base, and one run scored), John Morrison (2/3, one double, two runs scored, and 2 r.b.i.’s), Dom Bisceglio (one run scored), Jon Masse (3/3, one triple, two runs scored, and 3 r.b.i.’s), Ryan O’Kelly (2/3, one run scored), and Nate Lacroix (1/2).
